In 2020 I guided the Barbados Government to create the 12 Month Barbados Welcome Stamp, the world’s first visa program specifically for remote workers. Over 60 countries, including many in the Caribbean and Africa, have since followed the Barbados example to encourage and accommodate remote work visitors. But why should remote work opportunities be open mostly to visitors to our countries? It just isn’t fair.
My name is Peter Thompson, and I've been earning a living using my laptop and internet communication for decades. Long before anyone called it "remote work.
I started out in remote work as a matter of necessity, decades before it had a name. Over 30 years ago I moved from a big Canadian city to a tiny town in the middle of the forest because that’s where my wife’s academic career took our family. I had left behind all obvious career opportunities in my profession… but it was 1993 and there was this internet thing that was just beginning to get a lot of attention. So remote work for me started by dialling up the closest internet service provider (about 2,100 km away) in the wee hours of each morning (when I could afford the long distance charges).
I felt the way a lot of you probably feel right now. Far away from opportunity, watching the "real" careers happen in New York, London, and Toronto... no rich uncle making introductions for me... no connections inside the firms I wanted to work with. I had a university degree, a laptop, and a quiet conviction that my address wasn't going to decide my ceiling.
Thirty-odd years later, I run a management consulting practice serving boards, government ministries, companies and institutions across the world. The work puts me across the table from cabinet ministers, philanthropists, and global multinational bank executives. All of it run out of my ocean view office 10 minutes from the beach in Barbados.
The main thing I've learned from my experience is that you don't need to live in Canada, Ireland, the UK or the USA to be paid like the residents of those countries are paid. You don’t need to emigrate. You don’t need an Ivy League degree. What you need is the right skills, the right infrastructure for delivering from where you are, and the right positioning in front of the people doing the hiring. Get those right and there is no honest reason a professional in Bridgetown or Nairobi should be earning a fraction of what someone less capable earns in Boston.
